On a beautiful sunny morning while having a cuddle with Beastie, I mentioned to my cousin that I could see a brown colour reflecting in Beasties stunning black coat and wondered if that might give us an idea on his ancestry, she replied by insinuating that the mix in Beastie might be donkey related. How cruel loved ones can be.
People have taken the guessing of Beastie’s mixed heritage quite seriously, one lady chased down a friend of her’s at riding school and made the friend show me photos of her dog which was a viramana cross black labrador. My Brother in Law is convinced that Beastie is part horse and even feeds him with a flat hand and call’s him ‘Hors”. Beast trots happily behind while Paul whistles the Bonanza theme tune.
So to put an end to all this guessing and insulting we decided to do a DNA test and choose to use Wisdom Pannel (http://www.wisdompanel.com) which was idiot friendly, fun, exciting and really professional. You just sign up, pay (it’s not to bad at £50). You get your DNA testing kit sent to your door with in a day or so, then you do the DNA swab leave it to dry, sort out stickers and post the test kit back. Three weeks later you get your results sent to you, BOOM!
So what is Beastie? He is Labrador retriever cross German Shepherd Mix – the mix bit is lots of Otterhound, some Whippet, a little bit of Collie and Doberman Pinscher and a dash of Dalmatian.
And sticky out tongue to the donkey, Hors and wildebeest critics out there!
The Whole project was so much fun and has really given me a much better understanding of my dog not only to know how better to train him but also to have a clearer idea of how to care for him. Would recommend this to anyone out there with a mixed breed dog.
